Guernsey Grammar

Welcome from the Headteacher

Mrs Christine Watson

Welcome to our website.

Thank you for your interest in our school and welcome to the website. The Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre is an 11-18 mixed school with two very distinct parts; an 11-16 selective Grammar School and an island comprehensive Sixth Form. Whatever your reason for visiting our website, whether you are a student, a former student, current or prospective parent or potential member of staff, we hope you find the site informative.

The school serves the island of Guernsey and, having opened in 1985, we combine the strengths of a strong academic record based on traditional foundations with a modern approach which seeks to develop the whole persona and prepare young people for a rapidly changing world. Expectations of all students are high and our school has a reputation for being a happy, friendly, stimulating and caring environment in which everyone is given the opportunity and support to complete their studies successfully and to reach their full potential. A noted feature of the school is the friendly atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect, and the supportive relationships among all who work there.

We believe in placing the student at the centre of their own education and that learning is a life-long experience. Students are encouraged to take some responsibility for their own learning, be independent and to support others in their efforts. We focus on the education and the development of the individual and all students are encouraged to take part in a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities available at lunch time and after school.

The Main School (Years 7-11) - is made up of 519 students.

The Sixth Form Centre (Years 12 and 13) – is made up of 435 students from every school within the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Students study a wide range of AS and A Level subjects, and from September 2012, we are delighted to be also offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Our constant challenge is to improve and, together, as a learning community, we will continue to set and achieve the high standards for which the Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre is well known, whilst producing well balanced, successful and happy citizens of tomorrow.

Our website can only offer a summary of the opportunities available to students. If you require any further information, please contact the school.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre is a candidate school* for the Diploma Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education—that we believe is important for our students. * Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or the Diploma Programme (and in addition the IB Career-related Certificate). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes visit www.ibo.org
