DESIGN &TECHNOLOGY - GCSE
GCSE Home Economics (Food and Nutrition)
This course is designed to enable students to investigate the relationship between nutrition, food choice and health and to examine the nature, function, application and implications of food processing in the home.
Students will study and develop competencies in comprehension, analysis and interpretation of information. They will also be provided with opportunities to investigate, organise, communicate and evaluate, using appropriate problem-solving and decision making skills.
The skills and knowledge acquired will be relevant and transferable to other settings, enhancing career opportunities and providing a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study.

Practical sessions
Students are required to undertake practical work on a weekly basis and while some recipes are compulsory there is increasingly an element of choice in what the students can make. As they progress through the course they are expected to make two or three items in each practical session.

The GCSE grade that they achieve is based upon a final exam (40%) and one piece of coursework (60%); both of these Units are taught with a combination of class-work theory, practical experience and experimentation. These experiences involve both individual and group work.
