REWARDS & SANCTIONS

REWARDS

Rewards:  Good behaviour and achievement is acknowledged at two levels, namely Credits and Commendations.  These are in addition to the system of Review Certificates for Effort and annual school awards.

Credits:  Credits are issued at a teacher’s discretion on the basis of everyday achievement and are logged in the Student’s Planner.
KS3: On receipt of 25 credits within a term, a student will receive a Commendation.
KS4: on receipt of 15 credits within a term, a student will receive a Commendation.

Commendations:  Commendations are issued as a result of high-level achievement, marked progress, school or group representation, leadership and initiative.
KS3: On receipt of three Commendations within an academic year a letter will be sent home from the Head of Year and students will receive a Certificate of Commendation.
KS4: Commendations are calculated and rewarded at the end of the year.

Many of the students’ achievements are celebrated in whole school assemblies, including sport, music, drama, extra curricular activities and for service in the island community.  Certificates of Merit and Distinction for Effort are awarded following academic Progress Reviews in the Autumn and Spring Terms.

Prize Giving: Prizes for distinction in academic work and outstanding progress are awarded at our Prize Giving event in July.  A  Presentation Evening is held for Year Eleven students and their Parents when GCSE certificates are presented.

SANCTIONS

We aim to provide and maintain a happy, secure and caring learning environment in which students and teaching staff may enjoy their right to work together effectively.

When problems arise sanctions include unofficial detentions for minor misdeeds; official after school detentions for unsatisfactory work (parents will be informed at least 24 hours beforehand); and exclusion for seriously unacceptable behaviour.

Unacceptable behaviour is treated very seriously and is addressed at two levels; Cause for Concern and Serious Incidents. Parents may be informed at both levels. Our main aim is to promote good behaviour and celebrate achievement through the use of rewards and to reduce the need for sanctions.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre is a candidate school* for the Diploma Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education—that we believe is important for our students. * Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its three academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or the Diploma Programme (and in addition the IB Career-related Certificate). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes visit www.ibo.org
