Use of Mobile Phones
Large numbers of students now possess their own mobile phones which are an important and useful part of our modern way of life, enabling effective communication, access to information and personal safety. We believe that it is our responsibility as a school to teach young people to use this technology in a responsible, safe and considerate manner and the following guidelines are intended to promote such use.
Students who bring mobile phones to school do so at their own risk and are responsible for their safe keeping. They should always be kept in their personal possession and out of sight throughout the day, unless handed in to the school office. It is strongly recommended that they are included in parents’ personal possessions insurance policy. Personal items are not insured by the School or Education Department.
Mobile phones may only be used at break times and at lunchtime during the school day and must be switched off at all other times.
Parents and students should be aware of the health risks associated with the use of mobile phones and of the advice of the UK Chief Medical Officers that children and young people, who are more vulnerable to these health risks, should be encouraged to:
- Use mobile phones for essential purposes only
Students should be aware that talking on a mobile phone can be an intrusion into the peace and privacy of other people. For that reason they should only be used at times and in places which show consideration for others. Visual and recorded images must not be captured without the express permission of the subject and must not be disseminated without their knowledge and consent.
The staff have been authorised to remove mobile phones that are being used in a way contrary to these guidelines. They will then be returned at the end of the day, but may not be brought to school again.
